Furnace Replacement: What You Need to Know

One of the last things a homeowner wants to do is replace that aging furnace. But what if the heat goes out in the middle of an Idaho winter and nothing you do can bring it back? Installing a new furnace in the midst of a blizzard is obviously not the best of ideas.

Faulty Furnace? Avoid Heat Loss with a New Furnace

Furnace replacement is something that should be considered long before the winter winds start to blow. Here's what to look for when you start your furnace replacement search.

  • Go with the best. Companies like Trane, Lennox, Carrier/Bryant, Rheem/Ruud, Coleman, and Tempstar are all popular brands for a reason: They are quite reliable, use many of the same replacement furnace parts, and compete for your business, which makes them more affordable.
  • Know what you need. Your older ductwork might not be suitable for use with your new furnace, and that can mean the added expense of parts and labor to install new ductwork throughout the house. But choosing a different type of furnace can mean your existing ductwork should work just fine. Consider the efficiency of the new furnace, and get the proper BTUs for the size of your home.
  • Look at warranties. Warranties on the heating unit itself are pretty straightforward, but what about labor and installation? "Reputable companies offer a two-year guarantee on the installation," HVAC expert John Gibson recommends. "Make sure the company has the longevity to back up their guarantees." A company that has only been in business for a few years has no way to prove their warranty.

Expect a furnace replacement to take a full day, perhaps more, depending upon the size of your home. Get the work done long before the Idaho snow starts to fall and avoid a heating emergency at the worst possible time.
